Abstract

This study explores the challenges faced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Indonesia, particularly focusing on the teaching methods employed to enhance students’ English proficiency at SMPN 1 Maospati. EFL teachers encounter diverse student backgrounds, limited resources, heavy workloads, and low student motivation. This study aims to analyze the current teaching methods used by EFL teachers and their impact on student learning outcomes, highlighting the need for innovative practices to foster better English language acquisition among students. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings show that the methods applied—especially Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)—are effective in increasing student engagement and understanding. However, challenges related to varied student backgrounds and difficulties in certain subjects remain obstacles. Interview results revealed that teachers implement diverse methods and media to increase students’ interest, and that integrating modern technology and project-based learning can help address these challenges. In conclusion, improving teaching effectiveness requires teachers to adopt student-centered approaches and increase motivation by using relevant and engaging materials.
