STIMULATING STUDENT’S INTEREST IN LISTENING THROUGH WESTERN MUSIC IN MAGETAN CITY

Listening skills constitute a fundamental component of second language acquisition, as they involve multimodal processes including auditory perception, memory processing, and contextual interpretation. However, the listening proficiency of secondary school students in Magetan remains relatively low due to limited exposure to authentic input and the lack of learning media aligned with students’ interests. This study aims to describe the effectiveness of using Western music to stimulate students’ interest and improve their listening skills. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation, which were analyzed using the interactive data analysis model proposed by Miles and Huberman. The findings indicate that the integration of Western music significantly increased students’ enthusiasm, engagement, and self-confidence during listening activities. Furthermore, improvements were observed in students’ spoken vocabulary comprehension, phonological awareness, ability to identify main ideas, and pronunciation accuracy. As an authentic input, music provides a more natural and enjoyable learning experience while fostering a positive emotional atmosphere that helps reduce affective barriers in language learning. This study concludes that the integration of Western music is an effective strategy for enhancing the quality of listening instruction and is recommended for sustainable implementation in secondary school English classrooms
