The Implementation Of The Novel “Of Mice And Men” As The Teaching Media In Reading Comprehension At The Fourth Semester Students Of Doktor Nugroho Magetan University

This study aims to examine the implementation of the novel Of Mice and Men as a teaching medium for reading comprehension and to identify the difficulties encountered by fourth-semester students of Doktor Nugroho Magetan University. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The population consisted of fourth-semester English Department students in the 2016/2017 academic year, with 30 students selected through purposive sampling as the research subjects. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and testing. The findings reveal that the use of the novel as a teaching medium enhances the effectiveness of reading comprehension activities. Students demonstrated improved performance, as indicated by individual scores ranging from 60 to 79 achieved by 14 students, with the “good” category representing the highest percentage at 46.7%. The study concludes that literary-based instruction using Of Mice and Men supports students’ comprehension development, although several challenges remain, particularly related to vocabulary difficulty, contextual interpretation, and literary language features.
