Abstract

Annual fluctuations in clove prices pose a serious challenge for farmers in Kare District, Madiun Regency. Price instability makes it difficult for farmers to determine the right selling time, leading many to rely solely on cloves as a seasonal source of income. This study aims to describe the social and economic responses of clove farmers to price fluctuations. A qualitative approach was used, employing observation and in-depth interviews with five farmers. The results indicate that socially, price fluctuations create psychological pressure that drives farmers to borrow money to meet their daily needs. Economically, some farmers have shifted to other commodities, such as porang (porang) and durian, which are considered more profitable. In addition to price, weather and pest attacks also exacerbate the situation. In conclusion, although farmers have the potential to become independent, they need assistance and education to avoid dependence on middlemen and to sustainably increase the selling value of cloves
