Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitates the adoption of clean and healthy living behaviors, one of which is proper handwashing practice. Students with special needs (SSN) represent a vulnerable population that requires adaptive and inclusive approaches to health education. This study aims to improve the knowledge and practical handwashing skills of students with special needs through video tutorial–based health education. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving 14 students with special needs as participants. The intervention was conducted online through video conferencing, supported by instructional video tutorials and the assistance of sign language interpreters.

The findings indicate an improvement in students’ understanding of the importance of handwashing and their ability to correctly perform the recommended handwashing steps. The use of video tutorials, combined with visual demonstrations and sign language support, facilitated better comprehension and skill acquisition among students with special needs.

This study concludes that video tutorial–based health education is an effective and inclusive strategy for promoting clean and healthy living behaviors among students with special needs, particularly in the context of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings highlight the potential of accessible digital media to support inclusive health education practices in higher education settings.
