Keywords:

his study aims to describe the understanding of productive-age youth regarding state defense (bela negara) and the factors influencing their perceptions. The research is grounded in the need to strengthen national awareness among young generations who face challenges arising from globalization and the rapid flow of digital information. The study employed a qualitative approach with a qualitative survey design. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and in-depth interviews with youth aged 18–30 years selected purposively. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing using thematic analysis techniques. The findings reveal that youths’ understanding of state defense generally encompasses moral responsibility, social engagement, and civic obligations. However, some participants still perceive state defense narrowly, associating it primarily with military activities. The factors influencing these perceptions include educational background, exposure to digital media, social environment, and family influence. This study emphasizes the importance of developing educational strategies that are relevant to youth characteristics, including strengthening digital literacy and character development grounded in national values. Such efforts are essential to fostering broader and more contextual civic awareness among productive-age youth.
